Ministry of Tourism flags regulatory limits and concerns over influencer content.

The Ministry of Tourism has highlighted the expanding availability of travel-related content across digital and social media platforms, while noting that it is not practical to monitor or regulate individual content creators and influencers operating across numerous platforms.

In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, Union Minister for Tourism and Culture, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, stated that given the vast number of social media users and influencers, the Ministry does not maintain a separate mechanism to verify the authenticity or safety of influencer-led travel promotions. He pointed out that since this kind of content is created by users and autonomously shared on digital platforms, it is not subject to direct government regulation.

The Minister went on to say that the Ministry of Tourism still uses its own platforms, such as the Incredible India Digital Platform (IIDP) and its approved social media accounts, to promote official and vetted travel information.

The explanation was offered in answer to a query in the Rajya Sabha, describing the Ministry’s present approach to digital tourism material and official destination promotion.
