Visakhapatnam Airport halted commercial flights before Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport opened in Bhogapuram on Monday.
IndiGo flight 6E 2018 to Delhi was Visakhapatnam Airport (INS Dega)’s last scheduled commercial flight on Sunday.
Visakhapatnam Airport Director N Purushottam said in a press release that the airport’s scheduled commercial operations have ended. He thanked every employe, stakeholder, and partner who supported the airport’s operations and passenger services.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation said that scheduled commercial operations at Visakhapatnam Civil Enclave will end at 12.01 am on August 17 when Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport near Bhogapuram opens.
The IATA airport code ‘VTZ’ was transferred from Visakhapatnam Airport to Bhogapuram Airport on August 17.
According to the press release, Visakhapatnam Airport’s Civil Enclave may resume non-scheduled commercial operations.
For decades, Visakhapatnam Airport had connected the city and Andhra Pradesh to major domestic destinations, serving passengers, businesses, visitors, and the regional economy, Purushottam added.
Terminal extension, enhanced aircraft parking, security and passenger amenities, DigiYatra services, accessibility measures, and sustainability initiatives increased passenger volume and infrastructure at the airport.
The Airports Authority of India thanked the Central Industrial Security Force, airlines, ground-handling agencies, regulatory authorities, concessionaires, and other service partners for keeping the airport safe, secure, and efficient.
The AAI thanked the Indian Navy for their coordination of civil aviation operations at the Civil Enclave, stating non-scheduled commercial operations would continue.
As Visakhapatnam opens a new aviation chapter, the AAI said stakeholder participation is essential for seamless connectivity, regional development, and aviation expansion in Andhra Pradesh thru the new Bhogapuram airport.
