And Beyond

Indian visitors to Japan surpassed 300,000 for the first time in 2025.

In 2025, the number of Indian outbound visitors to Japan surpassed 300,000 for the first time, marking a historic milestone. 315,100 Indian tourists visited Japan between January and December 2025, representing a strong 35.2% increase over 2024 numbers and a roughly 80% increase over pre COVID levels in 2019.

The record breaking performance demonstrates the increasing interest in Japan among Indian tourists, which is fuelled by better air connections, ongoing involvement in the Indian travel industry and increased knowledge of locations outside of the conventional Golden Route. This expansion has also been significantly influenced by Japan’s transformation into a year round tourism destination for Indians.

Autumn is becoming a more popular travel season in India due to the vivid autumn foliage. About 28,900 arrivals were made in November, representing a 22% increase, while approximately 23,300 arrivals were made in December, representing a 37% increase. With Indian families and honeymooners in particular enjoying powder snow, winter illumination and winter sports, snow resorts like Hokkaido and the Japanese Alps are becoming more and more popular.

This record breaking performance in 2025, according to the Japan National Tourism Organisation (JNTO) Delhi Office, was made possible by a number of important elements. These include Japan’s increasing recognition as a distinctive luxury destination that combines culture, modernism and nature, as well as the ongoing surge in international travel in the Indian market. While interest in the Golden Route (Tokyo–Osaka–Kyoto–Hiroshima) is still high, there is also a discernible increase in travel to off the Golden Route locations like Hokkaido, Okinawa, and the Alpine Route. Furthermore, Japan has become even more attractive to Indian tourists due to its improved hospitality infrastructure and more India friendly atmosphere, which includes tax free shopping, multilingual signs, unique cultural experiences, and the expanding availability of Indian food.

All Nippon Airways (ANA), which plans to start daily flights from Mumbai to Narita in 2026 and Japan Airlines (JAL), which has a new Narita route in addition to its current Haneda service, are promoting better air connection between India and Japan. Indian families will travel with more ease and flexibility because to their expanding services. Increased networks made possible by code share agreements between airlines and the growing popularity of connecting flights via Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, and Hong Kong also contribute to this rise.

Japan has become much more well known in India thanks to the JNTO Delhi Office’s ongoing marketing initiatives, which include consumer facing events like the Japan Travel Fair 2026 (JTF), advertising campaigns, trade seminars, FAM trips, and cooperation with trade partners.
