As tensions rise, India recommends its citizens to leave Iran.

In light of the changing circumstances, the Indian Embassy in Tehran has released a new advise advising Indian citizens who are currently in Iran to depart the country by all available methods, including commercial aircraft. The advise, dated January 14, 2026, comes after the Indian government’s January 5, 2026, notice. According to the Embassy, “Indian nationals who are currently in Iran are advised to leave Iran by available means of transport, including commercial flights, in view of the evolving situation in Iran and in continuation of the advisory issued by the Government of India on 5 January 2026.” All Indian nationals and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) in Iran were reminded in the advisory to exercise caution.

It further stated that all Indian nationals and PIOs should use appropriate caution, remain away from protest or demonstration sites, keep in touch with the Indian Embassy in Iran and keep an eye on the local media for any updates. Additionally, Indian people have been urged to keep their immigration and travel documents close to hand. The advise said that all Indian people in Iran should always carry their passports and identification credentials and get in touch with the Indian Embassy if they need help.

Cons.tehran@mea.gov.in is the email additionally, the Embassy has asked any Indian citizens living in Iran who have not yet registered to do so using the MEA registration site at www.meaers.com/request/home. The Embassy stated that “families in India are requested to complete the registration on their behalf if any Indian national is unable to register due to internet disruptions in Iran.” The Indian Embassy stated that it is still keeping a careful eye on the situation and encouraged Indian citizens to abide by official directives and stay in touch frequently for support and updates.
