Thailand Confirms Nationwide Songkran Festival in 2026.
The Songkran Festival 2026 will go place as scheduled in all regions of Thailand, welcome guests to celebrate the Thai New Year with a blend of ancient customs and extravagant celebrations, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).
The statement coincides with travel uncertainty around the world. According to Thai authorities, plans are in place to guarantee seamless operations during the holiday season. While TAT will continue to give information as needed, travellers are encouraged to plan their travels in advance.
“We are aware that global events have created uncertainty for travellers,” stated Thapanee Kiatphaibool, Governor of TAT. To be clear, Songkran 2026 will occur as scheduled in every part of Thailand. Thailand’s hospitality and the festival’s spirit are still the same.
Songkran, which is recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, embodies Thailand’s core ideals of respect, family, and rebirth. Traditionally characterised by temple visits, water-pouring ceremonies for elders, and merit-making, the festival has expanded into a national event that combines traditional customs with modern activities.
The Maha Songkran World Event at Benjakitti Park, riverfront festivities at ICONSIAM and Asiatique, and music festivals like S2O and Siam Songkran are among the major activities taking place in Bangkok from April 9 to 15. Once more, Silom and Siam Square will become important locations for water celebrations.
Songkran is observed differently in each section of the nation. The central area, which includes Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, is famed for its elephant water-splashing custom and temple-based celebrations. Long-lasting festivities based on regional traditions are held in places like Chiang Mai, Sukhothai, and Nan in the North. The Wan Lai custom in Chon Buri keeps the celebrations going after the primary dates. While the South offers coastal celebrations in places like Phuket, Surat Thani, and Chumphon, the Northeast’s cities like Khon Kaen and Udon Thani blend traditional customs with modern festivities.
