Government Lifts Interim Domestic Airfare Cap from March 23.
The civil aviation ministry has issued a directive stating that the lifting of airfare caps would take effect on March 23.
Additionally, the withdrawal occurs at a time when the crisis in West Asia is causing major operational difficulties for airlines on international flights.
The ministry also stated in the directive that airlines must operate responsibly and maintain pricing discipline.
It stated, “Airlines shall ensure that passenger interests are not adversely impacted and that fares remain reasonable, transparent, and commensurate with market conditions.”
The ministry also emphasised that any excessive or unwarranted increase in fares would be taken seriously, especially if it occurred during times of high demand, interruptions, or emergencies.
The ministry is keeping an eye on airfare patterns in real time.
The decision states that the interim domestic airfare limitations were put in place on December 6 in order to curb an unusual spike in ticket costs brought on by extensive IndiGo flight disruptions.
Since then, the situation has calmed, with the sector’s operations returning to normal and capacity being restored. The decree stated, “After review, it has been decided that the fare cap imposed by the aforementioned letter shall stand withdrawn with effect from March 23, 2026.”
