WTTC Report Highlights Cruise Tourism’s Significant Global Impact on Communities.
Cruising for Impact, the most recent research from the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), details the substantial economic and social benefits that cruise tourism provides to local communities and destinations across the globe.
The paper states that in 2024, cruise tourism produced US$199 billion in overall economic output and US$98.5 billion in global GDP. The industry produced US$60.1 billion in wages and supported 1.8 million employment worldwide, highlighting its size and significance within the global tourist ecosystem.
The report, which is based on statistics from the Cruise Lines International Association, emphasises that over 60% of cruise passengers return to places they originally visited by cruise, highlighting the industry’s contribution to sustained tourism demand and repeat visits.
With more than 1.4 million jobs supported onshore, the results also show substantial interconnectedness with local economies. According to WTTC, one full-time job is created worldwide for every 20 cruise passengers, directly connecting visitor demand to job opportunities across destinations.
According to the survey, direct cruise-related expenditure amounts to US$93 billion, a large portion of which helps small companies and tourism-driven micro-economies in port and coastal areas.
The paper describes the wider effects of cruise tourism through seven major pillars: infrastructural development, environmental innovation, job creation, skills development, diversity and inclusion, community enrichment, cultural preservation, and crisis response.

When tourists opt to return after discovering a place via cruising, they sustain jobs, open up new business opportunities, and add to the towns’ long-term vibrancy. This study emphasises the significant benefits of cruise tourism, demonstrating how it fosters interpersonal relationships, sustains livelihoods, and adds value to locations all over the world.
In order to guarantee that cruise tourism is incorporated into national development strategies with an emphasis on sustainability, local sourcing, and community collaborations, WTTC underlined the significance of cooperation between governments, destinations, and industry players.
“With cruise passenger capacity projected to grow by 19% between 2022 and 2028, the sector is expected to play an even greater role in supporting communities and destinations worldwide,” the research continued.
