India drives 30% of SriLankan Airlines’ international traffic; Ahmedabad becomes its 10th Indian destination.

An essential link between India, Sri Lanka, and the larger international network is still provided by SriLankan Airlines. With about 90 weekly flights now in operation, India is the airline’s main market, accounting for roughly 30% of all passenger traffic and 23% of all foreign arrivals to the island.
The airline plans to implement a number of strategic improvements to improve its operations in India, building on this already-established base. Enhancing regional connection and promoting the strong economic and cultural exchange between the two countries are the goals of these programs.
SriLankan Airlines plans to expand its weekly services throughout its current network, which consists of Madurai, Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Kochi, Trivandrum, and Tiruchirappalli, as part of its 2026 strategy. The balanced service of both high-potential emerging markets and major urban hubs is a fundamental element of this strategy. Ahmedabad, which will soon become the airline’s ninth Indian destination and offer improved connectivity to a vital growth corridor, will further cement the emphasis on regional depth.
By leveraging the year-round demand and close cultural ties between the two nations, SriLankan Airlines will now cover six of India’s eight main metropolitan centers, substantially diversifying its India portfolio and improving route economics. This year, it is anticipated that these efforts will boost Indian passenger traffic throughout the airline’s network by as much as 12%.
In addition to meeting the specific needs of the destination events and wedding market, the airline serves a wide variety of travel sectors, including leisure, corporate, and VFR traffic. Currently, almost 30% of Indian passengers use Colombo as a hub for subsequent travel, demonstrating how effective its network architecture is for transit operations. Through a combination of direct services and pre-existing codeshare agreements, this system makes it easier to travel between major Indian cities and important international locations, such as the Middle East, the Maldives, the Far East, Europe, and Australia.
To support national tourism goals, SriLankan Airlines collaborates with the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority, the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, and other trade stakeholders. In order to cater to the broad interests of the Indian market, the airline’s marketing approach emphasises Sri Lanka’s many offerings, such as its heritage sites, wellness retreats, and varied landscapes. The “Ramayana Trail” project is a noteworthy example of this outreach, using historical and cultural narratives to highlight important spiritual locations throughout the island.
About 60% of Indian passengers’ reservations are made through indirect channels, such as online travel agencies and conventional trade partners, with the other 40% being made directly through SriLankan Airlines’ systems. Serving passengers throughout India via both channels, SriLankan Airlines maintains its trade partnerships while growing its digital capabilities.
