Ministry of Tourism introduces national adventure safety standards.
In order to improve safety, standards, and adventure tourism promotion throughout India, the Ministry of Tourism has strengthened a national framework.
In a written response to the Lok Sabha on February 2, 2026, Union Minister for Tourism and Culture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat stated, that State Governments and Union Territory Administrations are largely in charge of developing and promoting adventure tourism, including making sure that adventure tourism destinations are safe and convenient.
The Ministry of Tourism has developed a National Strategy for Adventure Tourism in an effort to establish India as a top adventure travel destination worldwide. Developing adventure locations, raising safety standards, developing skills, expanding capacity, and implementing focused marketing campaigns are the main objectives of the plan.
In close collaboration with the Adventure Tour Operators Association of India (ATOAI), the Ministry offers Responsible Adventure Tourism Guide Courses through its regional India tourism offices as part of its initiatives to encourage ethical behaviour.
In order to provide a thorough and uniform safety framework for the adventure tourism industry nationwide, the Ministry of Tourism, in collaboration with ATOAI, has developed Adventure Safety Guidelines, which further improve safety procedures. All States and Union Territories have received these instructions for their consideration and use in developing or updating their own safety procedures.
It has also been recommended that all States and Union Territories keep a close eye on adventure tourism operations and make sure operators are fully adhering to safety guidelines and licensing requirements.
