United has added more elbow room to its Economy Plus seats.

For its future Airbus A321XLR aircraft, United Airlines has unveiled a new United Economy Plus seating choice with an open middle seat that gives customers more elbow room and access to a shared table.

The new seating product is anticipated to be introduced throughout United’s complete order of 50 Airbus A321XLR aircraft and will go on sale later this year. The airline is also considering the prospect of using the idea on other kinds of aircraft in the future.

United claims that it hopes to be the only airline in the United States to provide this seating arrangement. The announcement comes after the airline introduced United Relax Row, a couch-style seating idea for specific Boeing 787 and 777 aircraft that will make its debut in early 2027.

Andrew Nocella, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer of United Airlines stated, “We’re investing nose-to-tail across our fleet and giving customers choice and value in every cabin. Our newest aircraft, the XLR, has seats in Economy Plus with additional leg and elbow room in addition to all-aisle access lie-flat seats in United Polaris. All of these new choices will be adored by our clients.”

The new Economy Plus seats, which replace the middle seat with a fixed shared table that extends from armrest to armrest, will be installed in one row on each A321XLR. Passengers sitting in the window and aisle seats will have more personal space, and the table will have integrated cup holders and a smooth leather-like finish. Together with the three inches of more legroom that Economy Plus already offers, the new seating arrangement is available.

United stated that before reservations open later this year, more information, including cost, will be revealed.

United’s most upscale narrowbody aircraft for international short- and medium-haul flights is the Airbus A321XLR. Larger overhead bins, a self-service snack bar in the economy cabin, 4K OLED entertainment screens with Bluetooth connectivity in every cabin, and 32 premium seats including United Polaris Studio suites with privacy doors will all be included.

Later this year, United intends to launch the aircraft on domestic routes; international service is anticipated to start in early 2027.
