With the reopening of the Lachen axis at Taram Chu and the implementation of traffic controls by the Mangan district administration to guarantee safe vehicular travel along the Lachen-Lachung road, Lachen in Sikkim is now accessible to tourists. On September 10, 2026, an order was issued outlining the regulations.
All tourists and other light vehicles heading from Gangtok or Mangan to Lachen and Lachung must clear Toong Check Post by 4:00 pm due to the current road and weather conditions, topographical restrictions and the requirement to avoid travelling after nightfall. Cars that arrive after the designated time will not be allowed to go past the checkpoint.
Vehicles heading to Mangan and Gangtok from Lachen or Lachung must cross Toong Check Post before 4:00 pm. To prevent travelling at nite, plans have been made to guarantee that cars leave Lachen and Lachung on schedule.
As per the prior directive given on August 29, 2026, large vehicles and trucks will continue to travel along the Sanklang-Saffo-Shipgyer route.
The Mangan Superintendent of Police, as well as the relevant police and checkpoint staff, have been instructed to make sure that the rules are strictly followed. Additionally, the Lachen and Lachung Pipons will help distribute the instructions to locals, drivers, and other interested parties.
The rules went into effect right away and will stay that way until additional directives are given.
