Guwahati–Tezpur Highway to Boost Assam Tourism.
A major infrastructure project for the 135.87-km four-lane, access-controlled Guwahati–Tezpur Corridor of NH-15 has been approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA). This Ministry of Road Transport and Highways program, which will require a total capital investment of INR 8,970.20 crore, is expected to revolutionise regional connectivity. The project, which will be built under the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) Toll mechanism, will connect Tezpur (apart from the Mangaldoi Bypass) and Baihata Chariali near Guwahati, acting as a crucial conduit for the region’s developing tourism and economic sectors.
The corridor presents a revolutionary chance for tour operators and hospitality stakeholders to fortify tourism circuits. The highway intends to provide smooth travel between Guwahati, Tezpur, and the larger North Assam region by enhancing access to busy locations including the Maa Kamakhaya Temple, Kaziranga National Park, and Orang National Park. The enhanced infrastructure is anticipated to support the growing “tea tourism” sector, which goes beyond conventional wildlife and spiritual tourism. This would enable tourists to easily discover the heritage gardens and culture of Assam’s tea business, which continues to be a vital component of the regional trade scene.
The project is intended to give fleet managers and travel logistics major operational benefits. It is anticipated to result in a 100% increase in average travel speeds and a 50% reduction in travel time, which will directly improve fuel efficiency and minimise vehicle operating costs. The highway expands the economic potential of the Northeast travel industry by fortifying connections between Guwahati in Assam and important locations like Itanagar and Pasighat in Arunachal Pradesh.
