Ethiopian Airlines and Boeing announce order for nine 787 Dreamliners.

The airline’s announcement at the Dubai Airshow that it would purchase 11 737 MAX aircraft was followed by its most recent 787 purchase. The two orders, which were completed in December 2025, add 20 fuel efficient Boeing aircraft to Ethiopian Airlines’ order book.

“We are happy to announce that we have placed an order for nine Boeing 787 Dreamliners to add to our current fleet. Mesfin Tasew, CEO of Ethiopian Airlines Group, stated, “This order demonstrates our ongoing commitment to expanding our fleet with contemporary, fuel efficient aircraft, thereby further strengthening our customer service. The largest 787 Dreamliner fleet in Africa is operated by Ethiopian Airlines, which also flies its 787-8 and 787-9 aircraft on important intra African routes throughout the second largest continent in the world, as well as intercontinental routes from Addis Ababa to popular destinations in Europe, Asia, and North America.

Ethiopian Airlines is able to transport people point-to-point throughout Africa while carrying goods in the aircraft’s belly for high demand trade lanes thanks to the 787 Dreamliner’s capacity and efficiency, which cut fuel consumption and emissions by 25% when compared to the aircraft it replaces.

More than 520 new nonstop routes between previously unserved city pairs have been opened by airlines since 2011 thanks to the 787 Dreamliner family, which has carried over 1 billion passengers.

The largest Boeing aircraft fleet in Africa is flown by Ethiopian Airlines, which also has the greatest backlog of 737 MAX, 777X, and 787 Dreamliner aircraft on the continent.
