Malaysia Aviation Group names Captain Nasaruddin A. Bakar as President & Group CEO

Malaysia Aviation Group has appointed Captain Nasaruddin A. Bakar as President and Group Chief Executive Officer, succeeding the Group Managing Director role as part of a planned leadership transition effective February 1, 2026, following Datuk Captain Izham Ismail’s retirement on January 31, 2026.

Leadership transition

The board confirmed a new designation of President and Group CEO to replace the former Group Managing Director position, aligning with MAG’s strategic succession plan for long-term stability and growth. Captain Nasaruddin, a veteran leader within MAG, will assume the role upon Izham’s retirement after more than four decades with the company, including his tenure as the group’s longest-serving chief executive since December 2017.

About Captain Nasaruddin

Nasaruddin brings over three decades of experience spanning flight operations, management, and strategy across the MAG ecosystem, most recently serving as Chief Operating Officer of Malaysia Airlines. He has led key transformation initiatives within the group, underscoring deep familiarity with MAG’s business, culture, and ambitions.

Mandate and priorities

As President and Group CEO, Nasaruddin will oversee execution of MAG’s strategic priorities across airlines and non-airlines portfolios, driving operational excellence, customer experience, and sustainable growth. His remit includes advancing MAG’s Long-Term Business Plan 3.0 (LTBP3.0) while strengthening competitiveness in the global aviation landscape.

Continuity and growth outlook

MAG stated that improved financial strength positions the group to pursue its next phase of growth and more sustainable operations under the new leadership structure. The appointment ensures continuity across MAG’s businesses and profit centers, including airline operations, loyalty and travel services, and aviation services.

Tribute to outgoing leader

Datuk Captain Izham Ismail began his career with Malaysia Airlines as a pilot in 1979 and led pivotal restructuring and operational improvements that returned MAG to profitability in recent years. His retirement marks the close of a notable chapter in the company’s history, paving the way for a smooth handover to a home-grown successor.

Effective timelines and designation

Izham retires effective January 31, 2026, with Nasaruddin stepping in as President and Group CEO on February 1, 2026, formalizing the shift from the Group Managing Director designation to the enhanced leadership role. The timing supports a measured transition period to sustain momentum across MAG’s transformation agenda.
