Kuehne+Nagel and SWISS collaborate to advance environmentally friendly air travel
The two partners’ long-term commitment to buy such fuels is a crucial component of this support, providing Synhelion with a solid planning basis to increase its production of synthetic fuels. Kuehne+Nagel and SWISS will collaborate to advance environmentally friendly air travel. The research and commercialisation of the synthetic aviation fuels produced by the Swiss clean-tech company Synhelion are supported by the airline and the logistics company. Kuehne+Nagel and Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) will strengthen their strategic alliance in order to increase the sustainability of air travel. In accordance with a Memorandum of Understanding, the partners will collaborate on a number of sustainability initiatives, with an emphasis on innovative technologies that will increase the transportation industry’s sustainability and efficiency. The partners’ mutual dedication to the sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) being developed by Synhelion, the Swiss clean-tech pioneer, is at the core of the partnership. Kuehne+Nagel and SWISS, its Swiss WorldCargo airfreight company, will work together to facilitate the expansion of this fuel technology. The partners’ long-term project to acquire SAF has already reached a first milestone, providing fuel producers like Synhelion with the planning framework they require to increase their SAF output and advance their technology. Additionally, SWISS and Kuehne+Nagel will directly contribute to increasing sustainability in the transportation industry by using SAF. Under their new commitment, SWISS will purchase at least 200 tonnes of Synhelion SAF annually and resale some of it to Kuehne+Nagel. Jens Fehlinger, CEO of SWISS, emphasises that “sustainable aviation fuels are a key element in our endeavours to make air transport more sustainable.” But because these fuels are currently costly and scarce, we need reliable partners to support their continued development. We are thrilled to be able to start the first commercial deliveries of Synhelion’s synthetic gasoline in collaboration with Kuehne+Nagel. This is a significant advancement and unequivocal evidence of the proactive role SWISS seeks to play in this crucial field. Kuehne+Nagel has committed to using Synhelion’s SAF for air freight transportation with Swiss WorldCargo for a term of five years, starting in 2027. By doing this, Kuehne+Nagel will carry on with its ongoing efforts to assist in the decarbonisation of the logistics industry and will also make it possible for its airfreight clients to sustainably lower their own carbon footprint. We need to increase the production of synthetic SAF in order to achieve the aviation industry’s climate commitments. Yngve Ruud, a member of the Management Board in charge of Air Logistics, says, “At Kuehne+Nagel, we are taking the lead by partnering with SWISS and Synhelion to accelerate these technologies, making them economically viable.” “With this cutting-edge technology, we can provide our clients with the chance to lessen their environmental impact.”
