Benin to hold inaugural African Black Travel Summit in 2027.

Benin will host the 2027 edition of the Black Travel Summit (BTS), an organization devoted to promoting the prospects and interests of Black and Afro-descendant professionals in the travel and tourism sector, in Cotonou. The unexpected news, which was announced at the Summit’s Black Travel Awards Gala on October 17 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is a significant turning point for the organization. The announcement marks the Summit’s first visit to Africa and the start of an exciting new phase in its goal to unite the Black travel community worldwide.

Travel entrepreneurs, tourism executives, hospitality experts, travel consultants, content producers, and other industry stakeholders from Africa, the Americas, the Caribbean, Europe, and beyond will come together for the 2027 Black Travel Summit in collaboration with Benin Tourism.

The Summit’s entrance in Benin marks a major advancement in its global development, following its first international edition in Rio de Janeiro in 2025 and its return to the United States in Milwaukee in 2026.

When representatives from Benin Tourism met with the BTS team at the 2025 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, the cooperation between Benin Tourism and the Black Travel Summit started to take shape. A common goal of bringing the Summit to Africa emerged from what started out as an international industry meeting. The Summit’s arrival in Cotonou, Benin, represents a pivotal new chapter in its global expansion, connecting Africa and its diaspora through travel, culture, entrepreneurship, and international business, after successful editions in popular travel destinations like Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Black American leisure travellers made 184.12 million trips in 2023, spending an estimated USD 145 billion, according to industry data by the Black Travel Alliance and MMGY Travel Intelligence. This relationship shows how bringing together industry stakeholders can go beyond networking to spur global alliances, open doors to new markets, and translate common goals into tangible action.

Benin’s selection builds on this momentum and reaffirms the Summit’s dedication to fostering cross-border opportunities and linking locations, companies, and individuals that stand to gain from collaborating. It also heralds the next stage of BTS’s global expansion, which will involve strengthening ties between the African continent and the global diaspora while broadening its global reach.
