SITA releases an API solution for Advance Flight Delay Notification.

In order to provide airlines and airports with early notice of possible delays, SITA created the Advance Flight Delay Notification API. This enables teams to take action sooner and prevent disruption before it gets out of hand.

Late action already has a large cost impact. According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), throughout the last ten years, airlines and passengers in Europe alone have lost EUR16.1 billion due to air traffic flow management delays. The lack of timely information required to modify plans, reallocate resources, and safeguard future schedules before disruptions spread is largely to blame for this expense rather than the delay itself.

To bridge that gap, SITA has developed the Advance Flight Delay Notification API. The technology anticipates possible delays and automatically notifies destination airports by combining business logic based on estimated flight time with the most recent departure information. It provides destination airports with automatic early alerts and real-time updates on flights that are delayed or possibly disrupted. This can reduce the impact on aircraft turnarounds, crew planning, gate allocation, and passenger connections by allowing airline and airport arrival teams the time they need to modify operational plans earlier.

Arrival airports are still compelled to respond rather than take action, according to Martin Smillie, Senior Vice President, Communications and Data Exchange at SITA. By providing early, dependable signals, the Advance Flight Delay Notification API changes that paradigm. This allows operational decisions to be taken gradually rather than under duress, which lessens the impact on passengers, expenses, and airline network performance.

Clearer coordination and more efficient resource planning are supported by the system, which sends push notifications and centralised alerts to important stakeholders at arriving airports. By gaining early insight into incoming disruption, aircraft service teams, ground handlers, and subsequent crews can prevent idle time, last-minute changes, and needless stress on already limited operations.

The Advance Flight Delay Notification API eliminates the need for manual updates and repetitive schedule enquiries by using secure, encrypted HTTP connections. When a flight is anticipated to depart fifteen minutes later than planned, automated alerts notify passengers, providing teams with crucial advance notice to modify passenger processing, aircraft maintenance, and subsequent flight schedules.
