Antarctica21 launches hybrid-electric Magellan Discoverer for the 2026–27 season.
The first hybrid-electric exploration cruise ship constructed in the Americas, Magellan Discoverer, has been launched, according to Antarctica21. Reservations are now being accepted through early 2028 for the 2026–2027 Antarctic season, when the ship will go into operation.
The next step in Antarctica21’s small-ship development is Magellan Discoverer, which was built in Chile and built especially for the airline’s air cruise operations. With a length of 94 meters, the ship can hold 76 passengers on three passenger decks while being manned by 67 staff members, ensuring the high crew-to-guest ratio that characterises the Antarctica21 experience.
The ship’s hybrid-electric propulsion system, which combines IMO (International Maritime Organization) Tier III-compliant engines with marine batteries, improves overall energy efficiency while lowering CO2 emissions and underwater noise. In one of the most delicate places on Earth, onboard systems enable lower-impact expedition cruising by recovering operating energy and recycling engine heat for warmth. Constructed in accordance with Polar Class 6 specifications1, the ship is intended for responsible and safe passage through Antarctic waters.
Grand Veranda Suites, Family Suites, Deluxe Veranda Cabins, and Single Veranda Cabins are among the 40 cabins available on the Magellan Discoverer. Every cabin has an own balcony, making them very appealing to Indian FITs, families, and lone visitors looking for comfort and seclusion in far-flung areas. Public sections have an eating room, gym, sauna, and observation lounge created by Tomas Tillberg Design, which reflects a modern aesthetic influenced by Antarctica and Patagonia.
Together with Magellan Explorer, Magellan Discoverer broadens Antarctica21’s fleet, enhancing its ability to provide its renowned air-cruise excursions. Bypassing the Drake Passage and maximising time on the continent, passengers fly straight from Punta Arenas to King George Island. This route has become more and more popular among Indian tourists who value comfort and efficiency on lengthy flights.
