Air India completes first-phase retrofit: 104 A320 Family aircraft now fly with new interiors

Air India has completed the first phase of its legacy retrofit programme, finishing cabin upgrades on all 27 legacy A320neo aircraft and bringing the total to 104 A320 Family jets now flying with new or enhanced interiors across 3,024 weekly flights on 82 routes.

What’s completed

The one-year project refreshed 27 A320neos with brand-new three-class cabins and the airline’s new livery, aligning product consistency across domestic and short-haul international networks such as Delhi–Mumbai and routes to Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Malé, Riyadh, and Singapore. The 104-strong upgraded narrowbody fleet comprises the retrofitted A320neos, 14 newly delivered A320neos, and aircraft integrated following the Vistara merger.

Cabin upgrades

All refitted aircraft now feature Business, Premium Economy, and Economy cabins, with new seating and finishes designed for a world-class onboard experience on short and medium-haul sectors. Seats include USB‑A and USB‑C power to support personal devices and access Air India’s Vista Stream IFE service, offering close to 900 hours of content on passengers’ own screens.

Scale by the numbers

Across the first phase, Air India installed 3,564 Economy, 648 Premium Economy, and 216 Business Class seats, alongside extensive new materials and a full external repaint into the refreshed livery on the legacy aircraft. The upgraded fleet enables 3,024 weekly frequencies, improving schedule reliability and product consistency across 82 domestic and regional city pairs.

CEO statement

CEO and MD Campbell Wilson said more than 100 A320 Family aircraft now offer modern interiors, underscoring progress on the carrier’s fleet upgrade and commitment to global-standard cabin products for guests. The completion marks a milestone in Air India’s broader USD 400 million legacy-fleet modernization drive launched in September 2024.

What’s next

Air India has begun widebody retrofits for 26 Boeing 787‑8s, with completion targeted by mid‑2027, introducing brand-new three-class interiors on long-haul services. From early 2027, 13 Boeing 777‑300ERs will also be retrofitted, with completion aimed by October 2028 following supply-chain-related timeline shifts.
