The centre approves the ₹887 crore “Viksit Bharat Mumbai Marina” to increase coastal shipping and maritime tourism

In an effort to boost coastal commerce, maritime tourism, and waterfront-led urban development in the nation’s financial centre, the Union Government has approved plans to build a world-class marina in Mumbai Harbour at an estimated cost of ₹887 crore.

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways has approved the proposed “Viksit Bharat Mumbai Marina,” which aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s goal of developing world-class tourist attractions and bolstering India’s maritime industry.

“This approval of the ‘Viksit Bharat Mumbai Marina’ marks an important step in our efforts to strengthen coastal shipping and maritime tourism,” stated Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, during his remarks on the occasion. Under the direction of Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji, the initiative will develop top-notch infrastructure, make the riverfront accessible to the public, promote private investment, and provide new job possibilities. In addition to achieving India’s larger blue economy objectives, it will help establish Mumbai as a global maritime tourism destination.

The Mumbai Port Authority will pay around ₹470 crore to build the main marina infrastructure on an EPC basis as part of the project’s hybrid development strategy, while a private operator will invest an estimated ₹417 crore to develop onshore facilities. The ministry has given its approval for the port authority’s investment, and bids are set to close on December 29, 2025.

“This project embodies PM Narendra Modi ji’s goal of making Mumbai a world-renowned marina destination. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal continued, “The project will boost maritime tourism, draw in private investment, and create over 2,000 jobs across allied sectors while opening new opportunities in coastal and blue economy activities.”

The marina, which spans about 12 hectares of water, can accommodate 424 vessels up to 30 meters in length. In order to facilitate safe and effective yacht operations, the marine infrastructure will feature an approach trestle, piled breakwater, service platforms, pontoons, and gangways.

The private operator will construct the following onshore facilities: a marina terminal building, a Namo Bharat International Sailing School, a marine tourism development centre, hotel and clubhouse amenities, a skill development centre, and infrastructure for boat stacking and maintenance No.

The project is in line with important national frameworks like the Cruise Bharat Mission, the Sagarmala Programme, the Maritime India Vision (MIV) 2030, the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision (MAKV) 2047, and the Mumbai Port Authority’s Port Master Plan 2047.

It is anticipated that the marina will facilitate private sector involvement in coastal infrastructure and create more than 2,000 jobs in the areas of marina operations, cruise services, hospitality, and related industries. Additionally, it aims to enhance public access to the waterfront and bolster Mumbai’s standing as a significant centre for cruise and maritime tourism.
