Maharashtra’s Sindhudurg will get its first five-star hotel

The long-delayed Shiroda-Velaghar Taj tourism project is gaining traction. The Sindhudurg district’s tourism industry is anticipated to grow after this project is finished, and more jobs will be produced for young people.

Shambhuraj Desai, the Minister of Tourism, presided over a special meeting held at the government home in Meghdoot, Mumbai. The purpose of the conference was to expedite the construction of the ambitious tourism project at Shiroda-Velaghar in Sindhudurg district, which was started by Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL, Taj Group).

For the project, about 52.63 hectares of land in Shiroda-Velaghar have been purchased. Previous failures in the property acquisition process raised concerns about local farmers’ remuneration. However, the State Government has acknowledged this issue and approved a special compensation contract in principle. Additionally, the process of establishing a supplemental agreement between the State Government, Taj Group, and local farmers has already begun.

The minister of tourism issued explicit directives to guarantee that the local landowners receive payment for the purchase of their land for the project as soon as possible, in two stages. He went on to say that the Maharashtra Tourism Department, Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL-Taj Group), and the local villagers will soon sign a tripartite agreement. This agreement will establish a precise and organised framework that guarantees employment and local residents’ rights, as well as the project’s equitable execution.

On this occasion, Minister of Fisheries and Ports Nitesh Rane noted that the long-delayed project is now back on track and will significantly aid in the development of Sindhudurg’s first five-star hotel, thanks to Minister Desai’s coordinated efforts. Through MLA Deepak Kesarkar, he also asked the people of Sindhudurg to fully embrace this ambitious tourism project.

The Sindhudurg district’s tourism industry is anticipated to grow after this project is finished, and more jobs will be produced for young people. This fact alone served as justification for the necessity of locals’ collaboration and support in carrying out the tourism initiative.

Managing Director of the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation, Neelesh Ramesh Gatne (IAS), Deputy Secretary & Joint Director, Directorate of Tourism, Vijay Powar, Principal Secretary, Department of Tourism, Sanjay Khandare (IAS), MLA from Sawantwadi, Deepak Kesarkar, and other representatives from the Indian Hotels Company Limited, as well as a few local villagers, attended the meeting. In addition to them, the Sindhudurg District Collector was present via video conference.
