Navi Mumbai International Airport Opens: Akasa Air and IndiGo to start operations

With more parking bases and foreign flights to important Middle Eastern and Southeast Asian markets, Akasa Air will progressively expand its services from NMIA. By using NMIA as a strategic gateway, IndiGo hopes to give travellers options both inside and outside of the city.

The recently opened Navi Mumbai International Airport is now home to Akasa Air and IndiGo. The first flight from Delhi to Navi Mumbai and the first flight from the airport back to the nation’s capital marked the beginning of Akasa Air’s operations. In order to improve connection from the new airport, IndiGo also started operating on the same day, making its maiden arrival from Bengaluru and then departing for Hyderabad.

“We are happy to start operations from Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), the second airport in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region,” stated Vinay Malhotra, Head of Global Sales at IndiGo. This allows us to provide passengers to and from Mumbai with even more travel options. IndiGo will first link NMIA to more than ten important locations throughout the country. These recently introduced offerings will enhance Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and aid in the expansion of this brand-new aviation gateway.

“Airports are not simply points of departure and arrival; they are long-term investments in the country’s economic and social mobility ecosystem,” stated Vinay Dube, founder and CEO of Akasa Air, in response to the decision. Anchored by contemporary infrastructure and improved customer experience, Navi Mumbai International Airport represents a generational extension of aviation capacity for the Mumbai Metropolitan area. The decision to launch Akasa Air’s operations from Navi Mumbai International Airport is a progressive one that enhances our capacity to carry more passengers while accounting for the adaptability needed for future decades of expansion. We are reaffirming our dedication to Mumbai as a major hub in our network by operating out of both Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and Navi Mumbai International Airport.

Improved connectivity from the area will help regional development, cement economic ties, and guarantee that aviation remains a reliable source of prosperity for India. Navi Mumbai International Airport will house the majority of Akasa Air’s fleet and operations, and we are honoured to be among the first and most important players in this historic development,” he continued.

The strategic growth objectives of both airlines include the start of operations from Navi Mumbai International Airport. Akasa Air will gradually increase its services from NMIA, targeting hundreds of weekly domestic and international departures, while expanding its network with additional parking bases and international routes to key Middle Eastern and Southeast Asian markets. IndiGo aims to leverage NMIA as a strategic gateway, complementing Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and providing seamless travel options for passengers in and around the city.
