New Zealand to process select tourist and transit visas online from October 1.
On October 1, 2026, New Zealand will no longer accept paper applications for some tourist and transit visas. Instead, candidates must use Immigration New Zealand‘s (INZ) improved Immigration Online system.
The modification is a component of INZ’s continuous shift to digital visa processing. The improved system already allows for the online submission of the majority of visitor visa applications as well as all transit visa applications.
“Moving applications online helps us focus on providing a more efficient and effective application process while making it easier for customers to apply and track their applications,” stated Immigration New Zealand.
Applicants who have previously submitted a paper application will not need to take any further action, and paper applications filed before to October 1 will continue to be processed as usual.
The Transit Visa and a number of visitor visa types, such as the General Visitor Visa, Business Visitor Visa, and Group Visitor Visa, including Approved Destination Status (ADS), will be subject to the online-only requirement starting on October 1.
The following additional categories are covered: Academic Visitor Visa; Adoption Visa; Adoption Pre-citizenship Visa; Antarctic Traveller Visa; Arts and Music Festival Visa; Culturally Arranged Marriage Visa; Crew Joining a Ship or Plane Visa; Dismissed Worker Visa; Escort of Medical Patients Visa; German Law Student Visa; Guardian Visa; and Medical Treatment Visa.
The Occupational Registration Visitor Visa, Parent and Grandparent Visitor Visa, Pitcairn Islander Visitor Visa, Private Yacht or Plane Visitor Visa, Short-term Entertainment Act Visitor Visa, Sports Events Visitor Visa, Super Yachts Visitor Visa, Tour Escort Visitor Visa, and Visiting Media Visitor Visa are all affected.
By enabling digital document uploads and providing applicants with real-time application status updates, INZ claims that applying through improved Immigration Online minimises paperwork. In order to minimise incomplete applications and processing delays, the system also offers built-in help and modifies questions based on an applicant’s circumstances.
In order to minimise errors, it also includes capabilities like automatic passport information gathering using the Identity Document Reader. According to INZ, the platform offers “a simpler and more user-friendly experience” and improves applicant visibility throughout the application processing process.
Starting on October 1, paper application forms for the impacted visa categories will only be accepted under extraordinary circumstances. Candidates who feel they must apply on paper must get in touch with INZ to explain their situation.
Applications will still be accepted through the current routes for a number of tourist visa categories that are not covered by the change. These include the Trafficking Child Victim Visitor Visa, Temporary Retirement Visitor Visa, Refugee Claimant Visitor Visa, and visas for spouses and children of military people, students, workers, and New Zealanders.
Paper applications for certain categories may eventually be eliminated, according to INZ, however applications will still be accepted through all currently accessible channels until further notice.
